How ARMS Handles Recovery

Every person fighting substance use or addiction is unique. Treatment must be individualized to be effective. ARMS offers a cutting edge, multidisciplinary approach to substance-related problems for teenagers and young adults, between the ages of 15 and 25, and their families.

Recovery is Different for Everyone

Unlike other substance use disorder treatment programs, we welcome all teens, young adults, and family members to seek information and support, even if they are not yet ready to undergo treatment. We offer one-time consultations to those who do not wish to enroll in our program and provide coaching to the families of young adults with substance-related problems who are not yet willing to seek treatment themselves. This approach has been shown to significantly increase the likelihood that their son or daughter will enter treatment.

A Team Approach to Recovery

Our experienced team of addiction clinicians, recovery coaches, and clinical coordinators specializes in working with teenagers and young adults to craft an individualized recovery plan that not only addresses their substance use but also teaches them goal setting strategies. Rather than simply focusing on their substance-related problems, we target improved health, happiness and self-sufficiency through education, employment, and a strong social network. By developing new interests, skill sets, and friends, our patients improve their likelihood of embarking on a happy, independent life without substances.

Our multidisciplinary approach includes clinical psychologists and psychiatrists who can assess and treat any number of related mental health disorders that may have contributed to, or resulted from, substance use. For those patients who are also being treated by a therapist or psychopharmocologist, we work in conjunction with these specialists to create a unified treatment plan.

We also partner with schools to help identify any previously undiagnosed neurocognitive deficits that may have contributed to, or resulted from, our patients’ substance-related problems. For those patients with legal problems, we can work with their legal team or help them to find the legal resources they need.

Coaching Patients Towards their Goals

Our patients are given an ARMS Recovery Coach who remains in constant contact with them, supporting their recovery through one-on-one meetings, phone calls, and text messages. Our patients’ families also receive a Recovery Coach, so they can address their own feelings and questions.

Addiction Is a Chronic Illness

Unlike other treatment programs, we don’t give our patients ultimatums about their recovery or threaten expulsion from the program. Instead, we approach addiction much like a chronic illness such as diabetes or hypertension.

We help our patients make lifestyle changes that will lead to improved health and well-being. We understand that changing their behaviors is extremely difficult, particularly for teenagers, and that relapses do occur. We support our patients, no matter what happens during their recovery process.

Our patients are encouraged to make a one-year commitment to our program. However, they choose the treatment length and structure they prefer once they are given the information and time to weigh their options. Ongoing recovery support is offered in 3-month packages. Reassessment occurs every 90 days, at which time patients may end or alter their treatment.
